Banana Pudding Cups

Banana Pudding Cups combine classic vanilla instant pudding with whipped cream, layered with fresh banana slices and vanilla wafer cookies. The pudding mixture thickens as it chills, while the whipped cream adds lightness. Arranging banana slices at the bottom and top layers ensures both flavor and texture contrast with the creamy pudding and crunchy wafers. This makes a creamy and refreshing dessert served cold, best enjoyed the same day to avoid browning of the fruit.

Description

Banana Pudding Cups bring together vanilla pudding made from instant mix and cold milk, whipped cream sweetened lightly with confectioners sugar and flavored with vanilla, fresh banana slices, and crunchy Nilla wafer cookies. The pudding is prepared first and chilled, thickening as it rests. The whipped cream is beaten to stiff peaks to provide a contrasting lightness to the creamy pudding. The banana slices are placed decoratively along the cup edges and layered with the pudding and whipped cream, interspersed with vanilla wafers for texture. The dessert is served cold and offers a balance of creamy, fruity, and crisp elements that make it a satisfying treat.

The pudding mix used is vanilla, but banana-flavored pudding mix can optionally replace it for a stronger banana taste. The layering technique, with banana slices at the cup edges, creates visual appeal as well as adding bursts of fresh fruit in every bite. The wafers soften slightly but retain some crunch between the creamy layers.

Since sliced bananas tend to brown, this dessert is recommended to be made and eaten the same day. Leftovers should be refrigerated and consumed within three days, though some textural softening will occur. The recipe yields multiple servings, making it suitable for a small gathering or family dessert.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 cups milk whole, cold
  • 3.4 ounce vanilla pudding mix instant, package
  • 2 cups heavy cream aka double cream or whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons confectioners sugar powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 banana peeled and sliced
  • 36 Nilla wafer cookies

Instructions

  1. Whisk the cold milk and instant pudding in a medium mixing bowl until thickened. Cover the bowl and refrigerate while making the other elements of the recipe.
  2. Add the cream, confectioner's sugar, and vanilla to a medium bowl and beat with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form.
  3. Slice the bananas and place them decoratively around the bottom edge of 6 cups. You will have left over banana slices for decorating the top.
  4. Spoon some of the vanilla pudding into the cup and level it out with a spoon.
  5. Place vanilla wafer cookies around the edge of the cups, then fill the inside with the whipped cream and spread to the edge.
  6. If you have more room in the cups, add more vanilla pudding or whipped cream layers.
  7. Top with a dollop of whipped cream and add banana slices and nilla wafers.
  8. Serve cold!

Notes

  • The bananas may brown quickly, so prepare these pudding cups close to serving time for best appearance and flavor.
  • Cover and refrigerate any leftovers, which should be consumed within three days for best quality.
  • You can add additional banana slices between layers for a stronger banana presence.
  • Although vanilla pudding is traditional here, you can substitute banana pudding mix if preferred.
