Basil Chicken Pasta

Basil Chicken Pasta features tender chicken breast pieces simmered in a tomato-based sauce flavored with garlic, onion, and basil, served over angel hair pasta. The sauce's balance of herbs and a hint of hot sauce brings a mild heat and herbaceous quality. Topping with Parmesan cheese adds a salty richness that complements the savory tomato and basil. This pasta dish offers a comforting meal that fits well into weeknight dinners.

Description

Basil Chicken Pasta combines cubed chicken breast sautéed with onions and garlic, which builds a flavorful base for a sauce made from canned diced tomatoes and basil. The sauce is cooked until thickened, then brightened with a splash of hot sauce. Simmering allows the flavors to meld, while the angel hair pasta is cooked al dente and mixed with the sauce just before serving. Parmesan adds a sharp, salty finish, and fresh basil can be added for extra aroma.

The dish achieves a balance between the tender chicken, the lightly acidic tomato sauce, and the fresh herbal notes of basil. Cooking the chicken and aromatics until translucent and lightly browned enhances the overall flavor profile.

To serve, dividing the pasta and sauce into individual bowls makes for an easy, casual meal. The combination of textures from the soft pasta and the chunky, saucy chicken mixture is satisfying.

If using a different pasta type, starting its cooking earlier or letting the sauce sit covered while pasta finishes ensures all components are ready simultaneously. When doubling, allow slightly increased cooking time for the chicken and sauce due to pan crowding.

Ingredients

Servings

Basil Chicken Pasta

  • 4 ounces angel hair pasta or pasta of choice*
  • 1 chicken breast cubed 1 inch, boneless, small, about 8oz
  • 1/4 cup onion about 1/4 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic pressed or diced
  • 1 diced tomatoes 14-ounce can
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons basil or 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil, dried
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt plus more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon hot sauce

For Topping

  • 1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese
  • basil optional, thinly sliced, fresh

Instructions

  1. Put a pot of lightly salted water on to boil for your pasta.
  2. Spray a medium skillet, with cooking spray, or drizzle with a bit of olive oil. Brown cubed chicken over medium heat, 3 to 5 minutes. Lightly salt and pepper the chicken while it is cooking.
  3. Add onions and garlic, and cook until chicken is cooked through and onions begin to turn translucent at the edges, another 3 to 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in canned tomatoes (and their juices), basil, and salt. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until thick and saucy, about 6 minutes.
  5. Start your pasta, and cook according to package instructions until al dente.* Drain and divide into two bowls.
  6. Stir hot sauce into the tomatoes and check the salt level. Add more if needed. Divide the sauce between your two bowls. Top with Parmesan and optional fresh basil.
  7. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Begin cooking pasta earlier if using a type other than angel hair to coordinate timing with the sauce preparation.
  • If doubling the recipe, add 1 to 3 minutes to cooking times for chicken and sauce as the pan will be more crowded.
