Basmati Rice Cooking Directions

This recipe explains how to prepare basmati rice by rinsing to remove starch, soaking in salted water, and cooking it slowly to achieve fluffy, separate grains. The method highlights washing the rice multiple times, salinating water to taste like sea water, and simmering the rice covered to attain ideal long-grain texture.

Description

Basmati Rice Cooking Directions describe rinsing the rice through a fine sieve multiple times to eliminate excess starch, which helps prevent stickiness. The rinsed rice is then soaked in salted water—salt added until the soaking water tastes like seawater—for two hours to season and hydrate the grains.

After soaking, the rice is drained and cooked with fresh water brought to a boil, then gently simmered covered for 15 to 20 minutes until done. The instructions note minimal disturbance to keep the long grains intact. This process results in light, fluffy basmati rice with distinct grains ideal as a side or base for various dishes.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 cup basmati rice long-grain
  • 2+ tablespoons salt
  • water

Instructions

  1. Place the rice in a large sieve, with a fine-grade mesh. Set the sieve over a bowl in the sink. Rinse the rice with cold water, dunking the sieve down into the water, and shaking gently. Then dump out the starchy water and repeat with clean water. Wash and rinse the rice FIVE times to remove all excess starch. The water should be pretty clear on the last wash. Try not to handle the rice too much, as it might break the long grains into pieces.
  2. Dump the rice into the bowl. Add luke warm water and 2-4 tablespoons salt. Add 2 tablespoons at first. Then taste the water. It should taste like sea water. If it doesn’t add more salt.
  3. Let the rice soak in the saltwater for 2 hours.
  4. Carefully drain the rice, pouring the rice and water back through the sieve.
  5. Place in a medium saucepot over high heat. Add the rice and 3 ½ cups fresh water to the pot.
  6. Cover and bring to a boil. Then lower the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes. When the rice is done, there will be vent holes in the top of the rice, and all the liquid will have absorbed.
  7. Remove from heat, and rest covered for 5 more minutes.
  8. Gently fluff the rice with a fork and serve.
