BBQ Chicken Wings
Description
This BBQ Chicken Wings recipe starts by preparing chicken wings with seasoning and a dusting of flour and baking powder to promote a crispy skin when baked. After an initial bake at 425°F, the wings are flipped and baked again to cook evenly through.
Meanwhile, a sauce is prepared combining barbecue sauce, sriracha, and minced garlic, bringing a sweet, smoky, and spicy flavor profile to the wings. After the initial bakes, wings are tossed in the sauce and returned to the oven at a higher temperature (450°F) to thicken the sauce and create a glaze. A final brief broil encourages caramelization and browning.
Alternative cooking methods include air fryer and grilling. In the air fryer, oil, salt, and pepper replace the flour and baking powder step to achieve crispness, and cooking times are adjusted. For grilling, wings are similarly seasoned without flour or baking powder and cooked over medium heat with occasional turning and optional basting during the last minutes.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds chicken wings split and tips removed
- 1 ½ tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
Sauce
- ⅔ cup barbecue sauce
- ½ tablespoon sriracha
- 2 cloves garlic minced
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F.
- Line a large baking pan with non-stick foil.
- Pat wings dry with a paper towel. Toss with flour, baking powder, salt, & pepper.
- Place wings on prepared pan and bake 15 minutes. Flip and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
- Meanwhile, combine BBQ sauce, sriracha, & garlic in a small bowl. Set aside.
- Remove wings from the oven and turn the oven up to 450°F.
- Toss wings with BBQ sauce mixture and place back on the baking sheet. Bake 10-15 minutes or until sauce is thickened and browned. Broil 1-2 minutes.
Notes
- Air fryer instructions: Preheat to 400°F; cook wings for 19 minutes, turning once. Toss in sauce and cook 2–3 minutes more. Skip flour and baking powder; toss wings with oil, salt, and pepper instead.
- For grilling, use medium heat (350°F) and cook wings about 20–22 minutes, turning occasionally. Oil and season wings but omit flour and baking powder. Baste with sauce during the final minutes.
