BBQ Tempeh
Description
This BBQ Tempeh recipe begins with sautéing chopped yellow onions and minced garlic in olive oil until tender and translucent, creating a savory base. Thinly sliced tempeh strips are then browned in the same pan until crispy on both sides. The tempeh is coated thoroughly with barbecue sauce, salt, and pepper and simmered over medium-low heat to absorb the flavors and thicken the sauce around the pieces.
The cooking process produces tempeh with a crispy exterior and a rich coating of barbecue sauce, enhanced by the caramelized onion and garlic. This results in a satisfying smoky, tangy vegan alternative to traditional BBQ. The dish suits casual meals and can be served alongside grilled vegetables such as corn, mushrooms, bell peppers, and zucchini to complete the plate.
You can customize the intensity of flavor by adjusting the amount of barbecue sauce used. If you want a grilled smoky note, this recipe can also be prepared in a foil packet on the grill. Additionally, it works in an air fryer at 400°F for about 12 minutes. Adding more oil may prevent excess caramelization during cooking.
Ingredients
- ½ medium yellow onion chopped
- 1 clove garlic minced
- 1 package tempeh 8-ounce, sliced
- ¼ cup BBQ sauce or more depending on preference
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large frying pan over medium-high heat, heat the oil. Once oil is heated, add in the onions and garlic and let them cook until they become tender and translucent, about 1 minute.
- While the onions and garlic are cooking, slice the tempeh in thin strips about, ¼-inch thick.
- Place the tempeh in the oil and cook on both sides until it is a crispy brown.
- Pour in your favorite BBQ sauce, salt, and pepper and mix with a spatula, coding all the tempeh. Turn the heat down to medium-low and let cook for about 10 minutes. Be sure to stir.
Notes
- If the tempeh cooks too quickly and caramelizes too much, add additional olive oil to the pan.
- Adjust the amount of BBQ sauce to achieve your preferred flavor intensity.
- To add grilled flavor, cook the tempeh wrapped in foil on the grill instead of the stovetop.
- Tempeh can also be cooked in an air fryer at 400°F for 12 minutes, placing slices in a single layer.
- Serve with grilled vegetables like corn, mushrooms, bell peppers, and zucchini to complete the meal.
