Beef and Noodles
Description
This Beef and Noodles recipe begins by sautéing sliced onions in olive oil until lightly browned. Thin strips of sirloin steak are quickly cooked to medium or medium-rare in the same pan to retain tenderness. Meanwhile, ramen noodles are boiled briefly until tender and drained. The sauce combines soy sauce, hoisin, Sriracha, toasted sesame oil, lime juice, minced garlic, and water, offering layers of savory, sweet, spicy, and citrusy notes.
After cooking, the noodles join the pan along with the sauce, coating everything evenly. This method infuses the noodles and beef with the sauce's flavors while keeping the steak juicy and the onions soft. The dish is served immediately to maintain the balance of textures and temperature.
Portioned for four smaller servings, this meal can be adjusted by halving the noodle quantity for fewer people while keeping the sauce the same. Additional sriracha or hoisin sauce can be added to taste. Serving alongside a salad can complement this hearty dish.
Ingredients
- 1/2 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 onion sliced, medium
- 3/4-1 pound sirloin steak (or use tenderloin) sliced into thin strips
- 3 packages ramen noodles, seasoning packets discarded
Sauce:
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon Sriracha sauce
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil toasted
- lime juice of 1/2 lime
- 1 clove garlic minced
- 1 tablespoon water
Instructions
- Boil a large pot of water for the noodles.
- Meanwhile, sauté the onion with the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring fairly often, until the onion is very lightly browned (approx. 6-8 minutes).
- Just before you're ready to add the meat to the pan, add the ramen noodles to the boiling water (they will only take around 3 minutes).
- Add the steak to the skillet and cook it for a couple of minutes, stirring often, until it's as cooked as you'd like it (I prefer medium to medium-rare, so it does not need long).
- Add the sauce ingredients to the skillet and give it a good stir. I add them right into the pan, so it's best to have them ready to go so you don't overcook the steak. You may want to reduce the heat if the sauce is bubbling too much.
- Drain the ramen noodles and add them to the skillet. Toss until everything is nicely coated, and serve immediately.
Notes
- The recipe yields about four small portions; add a salad or side dish for a fuller meal if serving big eaters.
- For two servings, reduce ramen noodles to two packages but keep other ingredients unchanged.
- Adjust sriracha and hoisin sauce to taste by adding more during cooking or at the table as preferred.
