Berbere Spiced Jackfruit Tacos - 1 Pot

This recipe creates a savory jackfruit taco filling flavored with a Berbere spice blend, paprika, cumin, coriander, and cinnamon. The jackfruit and aromatics are processed into a shredded mixture then baked, resulting in tender, spiced taco meat substitute with smoky and warm notes. It’s served in tortillas with crunchy veggies and creamy dressings for contrast.

Description

Berbere Spiced Jackfruit Tacos feature canned jackfruit combined with chopped onion, garlic, and a complex spice blend including Berbere, paprika, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, and cayenne. The jackfruit is squeezed dry and shredded or processed along with aromatics before mixing with the spices and sauces like BBQ, maple syrup, and soy sauce to balance heat and sweetness. This mixture is baked to develop flavor and texture, firming up the jackfruit while allowing the spices to meld.

The resulting filling has a tender, shredded texture reminiscent of pulled meat, with layered spicy, smoky, and sweet flavors enhanced by the Berbere blend's warmth and paprika's smokiness. The addition of BBQ sauce and maple syrup adds depth and a hint of sweetness that complements the spices.

Served in warm tortillas, these tacos are dressed with crunchy vegetables like cucumbers and creamy dressings such as vegan ranch, tahini, or a homemade vegan tzatziki sauce featuring silken tofu and dill. This combination creates a balanced bite with texture contrast and cooling elements to complement the spicy filling.

Optional additions like spiced chickpeas can boost protein and flavor, and the recipe suggests adjusting spices to taste. The baking step allows the jackfruit to dry out slightly, improving texture and preventing sogginess in tacos.
