Best Cream Cheese Frosting
Description
The Best Cream Cheese Frosting recipe uses softened cream cheese and butter as a base, beaten together until light and airy to create a smooth texture. Powdered sugar is added gradually at a low mixer speed to maintain the lightness while sweetening the frosting evenly. Vanilla extract rounds out the flavor with a subtle sweet aroma. The process ensures a creamy consistency that is neither too stiff nor too runny, ideal for decorating or layering desserts.
The frosting has a delicate balance of sweetness and tang from the cream cheese, making it versatile for various baked goods, especially those with warm spices or carrot flavors. Its creamy texture allows it to hold piping shapes or spread smoothly across cakes for a refined finish.
Preparing the frosting ahead of time is possible; however, if refrigerated, letting it come to room temperature before spreading will make it easier to pipe or smooth. This frosting should be kept chilled until use to maintain texture and food safety.
Ingredients
- 16 ounces cream cheese softened
- ½ cup butter softened, unsalted
- 2 cups powdered sugar sifted
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Instructions
- Using the whisk attachment on your stand mixer, beat together the cream cheese and butter on medium speed until light and fluffy. (You could also use a hand mixer.)
- Turn down the speed of the mixer and slowly add in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
- Once all the ingredients are incorporated, turn up the speed to medium-high and beat for 2 minutes until frosting is light and fluffy.
- Cover and refrigerate until ready to use. (see note)
Notes
- If made in advance and refrigerated, allow the frosting to warm to room temperature for easier spreading or piping.
- Use unsalted butter to better control the frosting's sweetness and salt balance.
- Sift the powdered sugar before adding to avoid lumps and ensure a smooth texture.
