Best Cream Cheese Frosting
Description
The Best Cream Cheese Frosting begins by beating softened cream cheese to a smooth base, then adding softened butter for richness. Vanilla extract and fine salt provide background flavor and balance. Powdered sugar is incorporated gradually, starting with three cups and increasing in small increments if needed, until the frosting is thick enough to hold shape but not dry. The mixture yields a creamy, spreadable frosting with a slight tang from the cream cheese, balanced sweetness, and smooth texture.
This frosting is versatile and pairs well with cakes or cupcakes, especially those with spice, carrot, or chocolate flavors. It can be spread or piped onto baked goods as desired.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter softened, unsalted
- 8 ounces cream cheese softened, full fat
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract pure
- 1/2 teaspoon salt fine sea salt
- 3-4 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
- Using an electric hand mixer or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Add the butter and beat again until fully mixed.
- Add the vanilla and salt, mixing again.
- Start with 3 cups of powdered sugar, mixing until no dry spots remain. If the frosting is thick and holds its shape, it is all finished. If it starts to fall, slowly add up to 1 cup of powdered sugar by 2 tablespoon increments until it does.
