Best NYC Chopped Cheese Recipe

The Best NYC Chopped Cheese sandwich layers sautéed, chopped burger patties with caramelized onions and melted American cheese, served in hero rolls with classic toppings like mayo, ketchup, tomato slices, and shredded iceberg lettuce. The cooked beef is browned and chopped finely to create a textured filling that melds with the softened cheese, offering a hearty and filling sandwich.

Description

This recipe starts by toasting hero rolls partially sliced for structural integrity. Burger patties are cooked in oil with diced onions, which are separately caramelized until soft and sweetened. The patties are cooked on high heat to establish a browned crust, then chopped finely with two spatulas while stirring in the caramelized onions. The mixture is divided into portions, topped with American cheese to melt smoothly, creating a cohesive filling.

The sandwich assembly includes spreading mayonnaise and drizzled ketchup on the toasted rolls, then layering the warm chopped cheese mixture, followed by fresh tomato slices and shredded iceberg lettuce. This provides a combination of savory, creamy, fresh, and crunchy elements.

The chopped cheese sandwich is a classic New York deli item known for its layered flavors and comforting texture, suitable for lunch or casual dining.
