Best Pizza Sauce

The Best Pizza Sauce combines canned tomato sauce and tomato paste with fresh garlic sautéed briefly in olive oil, fresh basil, dried oregano, and seasonings. Hot water thins the sauce to the desired consistency. This no-cook sauce develops flavor through the use of sautéed garlic and herbs, providing a balanced, aromatic base for pizza. It stores well and works nicely on traditional pizzas or creative variations needing a flavorful tomato foundation.

Description

This pizza sauce recipe relies on a blend of tomato sauce and paste to achieve a rich and thick texture suitable for spreading on pizza dough. The brief sauté of grated garlic in olive oil forms a mild, fragrant garlic base without bitterness. Adding fresh chopped basil and dried oregano introduces herby aromatics that complement the tomato's acidity and sweetness. A pinch of salt and black pepper season the sauce for balance, and optional powdered sweetener can soften the tomato's natural tang if desired.

Combining these ingredients off the heat preserves their individual flavors and freshness. The hot water dilutes the sauce slightly for spreadability without losing thickness. This sauce does not require cooking after assembling, making it convenient for quick pizza preparations but still offering vibrant flavor.

Leftover sauce keeps in the refrigerator for several days or can be frozen for longer storage, making it practical for batch preparation. It pairs well with various pizza toppings and can also be used as a dipping sauce or base for other tomato-flavored dishes.

  • 5 ounce tomato paste (can)
  • cup water hot
  • 2 cloves garlic grated
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons basil chopped, fresh
  • 1 teaspoon oregano dried
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper ground
  • powdered sweetener optional, pinch

Instructions

  1. Add the olive oil to a small saucepan and heat on low. Add in the garlic and sauté for about 10 seconds. Watch it closely and do not let it brown or it will become bitter.
  2. Turn off the heat and add in the remaining ingredients. Whisk until well combined. Remove from the heat and allow to cool before using on pizza or in a pizza bowl.
  3. Store leftovers in the fridge for 3-4 days or freeze in an airtight container.

  • Use freshly grated garlic and fresh basil when possible for enhanced flavor.
  • Store leftover sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days or freeze for extended storage.
