Best Stuffing Recipe
Description
The Best Stuffing Recipe brings together bite-sized cubes of white bread with a medley of aromatics including chopped onion, celery, and sliced mushrooms. Dried apricots and cranberries introduce a hint of fruity sweetness that contrasts with the savory nuts—walnuts and pine nuts—that add texture and richness. The mixture is tossed with olive oil and poultry seasoning to evenly coat the bread and vegetables, establishing a moist and flavorful stuffing base.
It can be cooked by stuffing inside a turkey for infusing meat juices or baked in a separate dish allowing control over texture and cooking time. Baking uncovered towards the end results in a stuffing that retains some crunch on top while remaining soft inside. The recipe suggests maintaining slight crunchiness in the vegetables, preserving freshness within the stuffing.
Drying the bread cubes for a day or two before using helps improve texture by reducing moisture and preventing sogginess. If preferred, drying can be expedited in a low-temperature oven. This preparation ensures the bread absorbs the seasoning and moisture properly during cooking.
Ingredients
- 4 cups white bread cut into bite sized cubes (sub your favorite gluten-free bread, if needed)
- 1 onion chopped
- 2 talks celery roughly chopped
- 1 ½ cups mushrooms sliced
- 1 cup dried apricot roughly chopped
- ½ cup dried cranberries
- 1 cup walnut halves
- ½ cup pine nuts or add more walnuts
- ¼ cup olive oil
- 1-2 tablespoons poultry seasoning
Instructions
- To make the stuffing: Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and toss to combine. That's it, seriously!
- To cook the stuffing: 1. Either stuff the cavity of the turkey before you roast it in your oven. Remember that a stuffed turkey will take a little longer to cook.
- Or 2. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Place stuffing in a lightly greased ovenproof dish and cover it tightly with aluminum foil. Bake in the oven for about 40 minutes, or until the bread is soft and the veggies are cooked. It is good if the vegetables still have a little crunch.
Notes
- Let bread cubes dry for two days, tossing after the first day to ensure even drying; alternatively, dry in a low-temperature oven for about an hour, watching closely.
- Bake the stuffing for 30 minutes, remove it, then return it to the oven for 15 minutes once the turkey is done to finish cooking and heat through.
