Biftekia

Made from ground meat marinated with aromatic herbs, biftekia are the Greek version of hamburgers, and one of the most traditional dishes in Greek cuisine.

Ingredients

  • 10 oz. ground beef
  • 4 tablespoons breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon dried mint , reduced to powder
  • 1 onion , chopped
  • salt
  • black pepper

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine all the ingredients, kneading the mixture with the hands for 5 minutes.
  2. Place the bowl in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
  3. Divide the meat into 8 portions and roll them up.
  4. Flatten each meatball to form the biftekia, a kind of small hamburger.
  5. Cook the biftekia on each side in a lightly oiled grill or cast iron pan over medium to high heat.
  6. Serve with a green salad and fries.
