Blue Margarita Recipe

The Blue Margarita is a classic cocktail featuring blanco tequila, fresh lime juice, blue curaçao, and simple syrup, served in a salt-rimmed glass with a lime garnish. This version balances citrus tartness with the citrusy sweetness of blue curaçao, delivering a cool, refreshing drink with a vibrant blue color and a salted rim that enhances its flavor.

Description

This Blue Margarita recipe starts by rimming a glass with salt for a contrasting savory edge. In a shaker filled with ice, blanco tequila is mixed with fresh lime juice, blue curaçao, which adds a sweet orange-citrus flavor and striking blue color, and simple syrup for controlled sweetness. The mixture is stirred until chilled and poured into the prepared glass.

The result is a vibrant cocktail that balances tartness from lime with the smooth bite of tequila and a sweet, lightly bitter note from the curaçao. A lime wedge or wheel garnish adds aroma and a citrus accent to each sip. The salted rim brings out flavors and tempers the sweetness.

Simple syrup can be adjusted for preferred sweetness, and rimming the glass with sugar instead of salt is an alternative. Simple syrup is made by dissolving sugar in water, allowing you to customize the cocktail to taste. This drink suits occasions when a visually striking, citrus-forward margarita is desired.

Ingredients

Servings
  • salt for rimming the glass - see notes
  • 2 ounces blanco tequila
  • 1 ounce lime juice fresh is best!
  • ½ ounce blue cura ao
  • ½ ounce simple syrup see notes
  • lime for garnish, wedge or wheel

Instructions

  1. Place the salt on a small plate and wet the rim of a glass with a lime wedge. Dip the rim into salt.
  2. Fill a cocktail shaker or mason jar half full with ice. Add the tequila, lime juice, blue curaçao, and simple syrup and stir until the cocktail is cold.
  3. Pour your blue margarita into the salt-rimmed glass and garnish with a lime wedge or wheel.

Notes

  • Simple syrup is made by heating one part sugar with two parts water until the sugar dissolves; adjust quantities as needed.
  • Increase the amount of simple syrup to make the drink sweeter according to taste preferences.
  • Instead of rimming the glass with salt, you may rim it with sugar for a different flavor profile.
