Blueberry Dumplings (Blueberry Grunt)

Blueberry Dumplings, also called Blueberry Grunt, feature a warm cooked berry base topped with tender, steamed dumplings made from flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, butter, and buttermilk. The berries are simmered with sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, and water until juicy and fragrant, then softly topped with spoonfuls of lightly sweet dough and cooked under a cover to create plump dumplings. The dish is usually served warm with vanilla ice cream for a comforting dessert.

Description

Blueberry Dumplings cook fresh or frozen blueberries in a sweetened and lightly spiced sauce flavored with lemon juice and cinnamon. The fruit is brought to a boil and reduced to a simmer before dropping mounds of a sticky dough mixture on top. The dough is made by combining flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, melted butter, and buttermilk to achieve a soft consistency.

Covered and gently steamed over the bubbling fruit for 15 minutes, the dumplings become fluffy with a delicate crust, soaking up juices from the berries underneath. This method results in tender dumplings with a subtle tang from the lemon and cinnamon warmth from the spice.

Served hot, spooning both dumplings and berries into bowls creates a warm, fruity dessert often paired with vanilla ice cream to add creamy contrast. The recipe notes that buttermilk can be substituted with a yogurt and milk mixture to achieve similar moisture and tanginess in the dough.

You can substitute the buttermilk with a mixture of plain yogurt and a little milk to get a similar consistency.
