Bread Dipping Oil & Herbs
Description
This recipe combines finely minced fresh garlic with dried oregano, basil, rosemary, red pepper flakes, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper. The ingredients are crushed together using a mortar and pestle to blend the flavors and then mixed into extra virgin olive oil, creating a dipping oil rich in herbal and garlicky aroma.
The resulting olive oil mix is ideal for serving alongside crusty breads, particularly French bread and baguettes, adding an aromatic and savory element to the bread experience.
Calorie content depends on how much olive oil is used; one tablespoon contributes approximately 120 calories, so usage can be adjusted to preference. Using fresh garlic provides the best flavor impact.
Ingredients
- 2 cloves garlic minced, fresh
- ½ teaspoon oregano dried
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
- ½ teaspoon basil dried
- ½ teaspoon rosemary or dried if you prefer, fresh
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- black pepper fresh ground, to taste
- ½ cup extra virgin olive oil or more as needed
Instructions
- Using a mortar and pestle tool, add half of the ingredients and crush all ingredients together until the garlic is all ground and mixed well with the other herbs. Repeat process for the remaining of the herbs.
- Transfer mix to a small dish or bowl and add olive oil.
- Serve with fresh bread (I like to use french bread or baguette).
Notes
- The calorie count excludes the olive oil, which varies depending on amount used; one tablespoon olive oil has about 120 calories.
- Fresh minced garlic provides stronger flavor than pre-minced alternatives.
- French bread or baguette pairs well with this dipping oil.
