Brown Basmati Rice Recipe - Instant Pot Pressure Cooker
Description
The Brown Basmati Rice Recipe uses one cup of brown basmati rice combined with water and optionally ghee and salt for cooking in an Instant Pot. After rinsing the rice until the water runs clear, all ingredients go into the pot. Pressure cooking at high pressure for 22 minutes followed by a natural pressure release of 10 minutes produces tender rice with separate grains. The optional ghee adds a subtle richness, enhancing the flavor slightly. This technique avoids the need to watch the rice on the stovetop and consistently yields well-cooked brown basmati.
The recipe notes that if you prefer softer rice, you can increase the water by a quarter cup without changing cooking time. The timings also work if you double or halve the quantities, making this flexible for different serving sizes. Fluffing the rice after cooking helps separate the grains and prepares it for serving with curries or other dishes.
Ingredients
- 1 cup brown basmati rice
- 1 1/4 cup water
- 1 tablespoon ghee optional, or oil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)
Instructions
- Wash brown rice until the water runs clear.
- Add water and rice to the instant pot insert. If using, add the oil and salt.
- Start the instant pot in manual or pressure cook mode for 22 mins at high pressure with vent in sealing position.
- When the instant pot beeps, do 10 minutes natural pressure release, which means release the pressure manually 10 minutes after the instant pot beeps.
- Fluff the rice with a ladle or fork. Rice is ready to be served with your favorite curry.
