Brown Sugar Boiled Frosting
Description
This frosting starts by dissolving brown sugar in evaporated milk and vanilla extract over medium heat, boiling for a few minutes to concentrate the flavors. Once removed from heat, miniature marshmallows are stirred in until melted, creating a fluffy and creamy frosting. The mixture is then spread onto baked goods while warm.
The boiled sugar base gives the frosting a caramel-like sweetness with a slightly thick but spreadable consistency. Vanilla provides a subtle aromatic note, while marshmallows contribute lightness and smooth texture. Optionally, sweetened shredded coconut can be sprinkled on top for additional flavor and texture.
Ingredients
- 1 cup brown sugar firmly packed
- 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup evaporated milk
- 2/3 cup marshmallows miniature
- coconut optional topping, shredded, sweetened
Instructions
- In a saucepan, combine the sugar, vanilla, and milk, and stir until sugar dissolves.
- Place the mixture over medium heat and boil for 4 minutes.
- Remove from the heat and add the marshmallows, mixing until dissolved.
- Spread the frosting on a cake, cupcakes, or cookies.
- Sprinkle coconut over the top if desired.
Notes
- This frosting is from a family recipe collection, preserving a traditional flavor.
- Apply the frosting while still warm for easier spreading.
- Add shredded sweetened coconut after frosting for added texture and flavor if desired.
