Browned Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

These Browned Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies deliver a rich, nutty flavor thanks to the browned butter incorporated into the dough. The recipe combines both white and brown sugars, creating a balanced sweetness that complements the milk chocolate chips. Chilling the dough before baking helps maintain the cookie shape and texture. Finished with a sprinkle of coarse sea salt, these cookies offer a pleasant contrast of sweet and salty in each bite, ideal for an indulgent treat or sharing with friends.

Description

The Browned Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe stands out by starting with browning the butter, which introduces a deeper, toasted flavor to the cookie dough. The dough mixes classic ingredients including white and brown sugars, eggs, vanilla extract, flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder, combined with milk chocolate chips for a smooth sweet melt. After chilling the dough to firm it up, the cookies are scooped out generously and baked until golden with slightly crisp edges. The final sprinkle of coarse sea salt enhances the overall flavor profile by adding a touch of savory balance to the sweetness.

By baking at 350°F on a lined or greased baking sheet and spacing the dough mounds well, the cookies develop a soft yet structured texture with a tender center. The coarse sea salt finishing touch adds a subtle crunch and flavor depth. These cookies can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container, and warming them briefly in the microwave revives their soft, melty quality.

Use about 2-3 tablespoons of dough for large cookies if you don’t have a large scoop. Chilling the dough before baking prevents excessive spreading and helps maintain the desired thick texture. These cookies are suitable for enjoying alongside milk, coffee, or tea.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 egg large
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 cups milk chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt coarse

Instructions

Brown the Butter

  1. In a small sauce pan, melt butter. Once melted, continue to stir over medium heat for 3-4 minutes until color changes from pale yellow to golden.
  2. Remove from heat and pour into a heat-safe bowl. Transfer to fridge for about 10 minutes until it has cooled but is still liquid.

Prepare the cookie dough

  1. In a medium bowl whisk together flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder.
  2. In a large bowl combine browned and cooled butter, sugar, and brown sugar. Mix for 2 minutes. Mix in eggs and vanilla.
  3. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and mix until just combined (don't over-mix). Stir in chocolate chips.
  4. Cover the bowl tightly and chill for 30 minutes.

Bake the Cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with a nonstick baking mat or very lightly grease the baking sheet with nonstick spray.
  2. Use a large cookie scoop to scoop mounds of cookie dough onto preparing baking sheet at least 3 inches apart.
  3. Bake in preheated oven for 9-11 minutes. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle with sea salt. Allow to cool completely on the pan.
  4. Store in airtight container at room temperature. For an added treat, warm up individually in the microwave for 15-20 seconds!

Notes

  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature to preserve freshness.
  • Microwave individual cookies for 15-20 seconds to warm and soften before serving.
  • If a large cookie scoop is unavailable, use 2-3 tablespoons of dough to form each cookie.
