Brownie Recipe from Scratch
Description
The brownie batter combines dry ingredients including sifted cocoa powder, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, and salt with wet ingredients of melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract. After mixing until smooth, chocolate chunks are folded into the thick batter, providing concentrated chocolate bites. The batter is spread evenly in a parchment-lined pan to facilitate easy removal and clean edges.
Baking at 325°F for about 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out almost clean ensures the brownies have a moist but firm texture and a set top. The remaining chocolate chunks sprinkled on top melt into the crust during baking, enhancing the chocolate flavor and adding visual appeal.
This recipe yields 16 bite-sized brownies suitable for sharing or portion control. The brownies can be cut into any number of pieces depending on preference. Choice of chocolate chips or chunks and type of chocolate—semi-sweet, milk, or dark—can be adjusted to taste.
Ingredients
- 1 ¼ cups granulated sugar
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cocoa powder sifted, unsweetened
- ½ cup light brown sugar packed
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 large egg
- ½ cup butter melted, unsalted
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup chocolate divided (see note, chunks
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F. Line an 8-inch x 8-inch pan with parchment paper. Spray the pan and paper with non-stick cooking spray. Set aside.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, brown sugar, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, melted butter, and vanilla until smooth. Then add in the dry ingredients and stir with a rubber spatula or wooden spoon until you have a thick batter. Fold in 3/4 cup of the chocolate chunks.
- Pour brownie batter into the prepared pan and smooth into an even layer with an offset spatula. Then sprinkle the remaining chocolate chunks on top.
- Bake for 45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out almost clean and the top looks set.
- Remove from the oven and cool completely on a wire rack. Cut into 16 squares (or however many brownies you want) and enjoy.
Notes
- Use either chocolate chips or chunks; semi-sweet, dark, or milk chocolate all work well in this recipe.
