Butter Cookies
Description
Butter Cookies require creaming softened unsalted butter with powdered sugar and salt until very light and fluffy, which helps create a tender crumb. Adding vanilla and almond extracts adds aromatic depth, while the egg binds the dough. Gradual incorporation of all-purpose flour ensures a smooth, workable dough. Cookies are shaped into balls, slightly flattened, and topped with halved candied cherries that add a distinctive color and sweet accent once baked.
Baking at 350°F yields cookies with lightly browned edges and a soft center, retaining moisture and buttery flavor. Cooling completely on the baking tray helps them set properly without crumbling. The almond extract contributes a gentle nutty note that balances the sweetness from the cherries and sugar.
Storing cookies in an airtight container at room temperature keeps them soft for several days, while freezing extends their shelf life for months. Thawing frozen cookies at room temperature preserves their texture. Using room temperature eggs and butter promotes proper creaming and dough consistency for even baking.
