Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Pour in the buttermilk and stir until just combined. The dough will be sticky.
  4. Pour the melted butter into an 8x8-inch baking dish.
  5. Spoon the dough into the baking dish, directly on top of the melted butter. Use a spatula to spread the dough evenly.
  6. Using a knife, cut the dough into 9 squares. This will help the biscuits bake evenly and make them easier to separate after baking.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the biscuits to cool in the pan for a few minutes before cutting them along the pre-scored lines and serving.

Notes

  • Use cold buttermilk for the best results; it helps activate the baking powder.
  • Mix the dough just until combined to keep the biscuits tender.
  • Score the dough before baking to make it easier to cut into squares after baking.
  • Store leftover biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • Freeze cooled biscuits in a freezer-safe bag for up to 2 months; reheat in the oven or microwave.
