Cacik - Turkish Cucumber Yogurt Sauce

Cacik is a Turkish yogurt sauce combining diced cucumber, lemon juice and zest, garlic, fresh mint, and salt folded into plain whole milk yogurt. The sauce is cool and refreshing with brightness from lemon and herbaceous notes from mint and garlic, perfect as a condiment or dip alongside savory dishes.

Description

Cacik blends finely diced cucumbers with plain whole milk yogurt, infused with fresh lemon zest and juice, chopped garlic, and chopped mint. Salt balances the flavors and enhances freshness. The combination results in a creamy sauce punctuated by the crisp cucumber and aromatic mint.

The lemon juice and zest introduce a citrus brightness that complements the cooling effect of yogurt and cucumber, while garlic adds slight pungency. This sauce is typically served chilled and can accompany grilled meats, vegetables, or breads as a tangy, hydrating condiment.

The size of the cucumber dice affects texture, with finer dicing producing a smoother sauce. Adjust salt according to taste, considering the saltiness of the type used. Garlic can be omitted for a milder flavor, and lime may substitute lemon if preferred.

Cacik makes about three cups and is best enjoyed fresh to preserve the crispness of the cucumber and vibrant flavors. It is a versatile addition to Mediterranean or Middle Eastern meals.

  • Lime juice may be used as a substitute for lemon juice.
  • Adjust salt quantity depending on whether using kosher or iodized salt, as iodized salt is stronger.
