Cake Balls Recipe

This Cake Balls Recipe uses a mix cake base combined with frosting to form a dough that is chilled, shaped, dipped in melted candy, and decorated with sprinkles. The result is bite-sized, sweet cake treats with a smooth candy coating that can be made ahead and kept refrigerated for several days. The method relies on baking a boxed cake, crumbling it finely, blending in frosting for moistness and binding, then coating with candy melts for a festive finish.

Description

The Cake Balls Recipe begins by baking a boxed cake according to package directions, using standard ingredients like oil, water, and eggs. After cooling, the cake is crumbled finely and mixed with frosting to create a pliable dough that holds together. This dough is rolled into tablespoon-sized balls and chilled to firm up. They are then dipped in melted candy melts, which provide a smooth, sweet shell that hardens as it cools. Sprinkles added on top add color and texture. The process allows for flexibility with cake and frosting flavors and results in individual cake bites that combine moist, soft interiors with a crisp outer coating.

The cake balls have a soft and tender texture inside, paired with the smooth, firm candy-coated exterior. They can be served as a fun dessert or party treat. Storing them chilled maintains their shape and freshness for up to three days, making them convenient to prepare ahead of time.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 box cake mix flavor of your choice
  • egg as called for on cake mix box
  • oil
  • water
  • 1 cup + 2 tablespoons frosting flavor of your choice, canned
  • 1 pound Candy Melts I recommend Ghirardelli Melting Wafers
  • 1/2 cup Sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Prepare cake mix with the amount of oil, water and eggs directed on the box. Bake in a 9”x13” pan according to package directions.
  2. Let cake cool completely, then break apart and crumble until fine crumbs form.
  3. Stir in the frosting until a dough forms. If the dough seems dry, you can add additional frosting, 1 tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency is reached.
  4. Roll the cake mixture into tablespoon sized balls. Place the balls on a parchment lined baking sheet and chill for at least one hour.
  5. Melt the candy melts in a bowl in the microwave, heating in 30 second increments, and stir until completely smooth.
  6. Place each cake ball on a fork and use a spoon to pour the candy melts over the cake ball. Tap against the side of the bowl to remove excess candy melts.
  7. Place each ball on a parchment lined sheet pan. Top with sprinkles.
  8. Repeat with remaining cake balls and candy melts. Store in the refrigerator until ready to eat. Can be made up to 3 days in advance.
