Candied Yams

Candied Yams bake sweet potato chunks coated in a buttery sauce made with brown sugar, water, and optional cinnamon and vanilla. The result is tender, sweet pieces with a glossy, syrupy coating that thickens as it cools, commonly served as a comforting side dish.

Description

Candied Yams are prepared by cutting peeled sweet potatoes into chunks and arranging them in a baking dish. A mixture of brown sugar, water, and unsalted butter is heated to dissolve and thicken into a glossy syrup. Optional cinnamon and vanilla add warmth and aroma to the sauce.

The syrup is poured over the sweet potatoes and stirred gently to coat all pieces. Baking at 375°F for 45 minutes with stirring every 15 minutes allows the sweet potatoes to soften and absorb the sauce, yielding tender and flavorful pieces.

As the dish cools slightly, the sauce thickens further to a sticky consistency that clings to the yams. Candied Yams are a traditional side, especially in holiday meals, offering a balance of natural sweetness and buttery richness.
