Caprese Pizza Recipe
Description
The pizza begins with shaping a pizza dough crust, which can be gluten-free if desired, brushed with olive oil and a sprinkle of flaky sea salt. Half the mozzarella cheese is shredded and spread on the dough, providing a melty, creamy base. Halved cherry tomatoes are arranged predominantly cut-side up to minimize sogginess, followed by torn pieces of the remaining mozzarella and a dusting of black pepper to season.
Baked at a high temperature until the crust is golden and cooked through, the pizza is then topped fresh with aromatic basil leaves for a fragrant, herbal note. A drizzle of reduced balsamic vinegar provides a tangy sweetness that complements the mild mozzarella and bright tomatoes.
This pizza suits casual lunches or light dinners and pairs well with a simple green salad. Using fresh ingredients and managing the tomato placement helps maintain a crisp crust and vibrant flavors.
Ingredients
- 1 pizza crust gluten-free if needed (see notes)
- 2 teaspoons olive oil
- ½ teaspoon sea salt flaky
- 5 ounces mozzarella cheese
- 1 lb cherry tomato cut in half
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- basil a handful; leaves
- Balsamic reduction to drizzle
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Form the pizza dough into a round pizza crust on a baking sheet. Rub the olive oil over the top then sprinkle with salt. Shred half of the mozzarella and sprinkle it on top.
- Top with the cherry tomatoes, making sure that most of them are facing cut-side up to prevent the crust from getting soggy. Tear the remaining mozzarella into smaller pieces and scatter them on top of the tomatoes. Sprinkle the pepper over the top.
- Bake the pizza for 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and cooked through.
- Remove the pizza from the oven then top with some basil leaves and drizzle with the reduced balsamic vinegar.
Notes
- This recipe uses a favorite pizza dough that requires some planning ahead but is straightforward to make.
- For a grain-free option, try green vegetable pizza crusts as alternatives.
- A store-bought crust may be used for convenience.
