Caprese Skewers

Caprese Skewers assemble cherry tomatoes, basil leaves, and bocconcini mozzarella balls into visually appealing, bite-sized appetizers. The mozzarella is optionally marinated in olive oil, Italian seasoning, and garlic to add subtle flavor. Finished with a drizzle of balsamic glaze and seasoning, these skewers offer a fresh and light combination of sweet tomatoes, creamy cheese, and aromatic basil ideal for snacks or party appetizers.

Description

Caprese Skewers are made by threading cherry tomatoes, basil leaves, and small mozzarella balls onto skewers. The mozzarella can be marinated in a mixture of olive oil, Italian seasoning, and optional sliced garlic for at least 30 minutes to infuse flavor, though this step is optional. The basil leaves are used fresh, and if large, can be torn to better fit the skewers. After assembly, the skewers are drizzled with the reserve olive oil marinade and optionally balsamic glaze, then seasoned with salt and pepper to enhance the natural flavors.

The combination showcases the balance between the juicy acidity of the tomatoes, the creamy mildness of the mozzarella, and the herbal brightness of basil. The balsamic glaze adds a sweet-tangy depth and visually appealing finish. These skewers serve as simple finger foods that can be prepared in advance and refrigerated for up to 24 hours, making them convenient for entertaining or light eating.

Marinating the cheese adds flavor but can be omitted for quicker assembly. If skipping marination, simply drizzle olive oil and balsamic glaze just before serving. The skewers offer a fresh alternative to traditional Caprese salad presentation.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 12 mozzarella balls bocconcini
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 clove garlic sliced, optional
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • 24 cherry tomato or grape tomatoes, about 1 pint
  • 24 small basil or 12 large, leaves

  3. Thread a cherry tomato on each skewer followed by a basil leaf, a mozzarella ball, another basil leave and finally another tomato.
  4. Discard garlic slices (or reserve for cooking) and drizzle 1 tablespoon olive oil marinade and balsamic glaze over skewers. Season with salt & pepper.

Notes

  • Marinating mozzarella in olive oil, Italian seasoning, and garlic for up to 24 hours adds flavor but is optional.
  • If not marinating, you can drizzle the skewers with olive oil and balsamic glaze just before serving.
  • Fresh bocconcini can sometimes be found pre-marinated at the deli section of some grocery stores.
  • Prepare skewers up to 24 hours ahead and refrigerate until serving.
