Caramel Apple Cake Recipe
Description
This recipe calls for mixing dry ingredients—flour, salt, baking powder, and sugar—with wet ingredients including vegetable oil, applesauce, eggs, and vanilla to form the cake batter. Fresh apples are peeled, cored, sliced, and tossed in cinnamon and brown sugar for warm spice notes. Half the batter is placed in a Bundt or tube pan, topped with the apples, and covered with remaining batter before baking at 350°F for about an hour. This results in a cake with tender crumb and embedded juicy apple slices.
The caramel sauce is made separately by melting butter and boiling it with brown sugar, baking soda, and half and half for 5 to 7 minutes until thickened and smooth. Once cooled to room temperature, the sauce is drizzled over the assembled cake, providing a luscious complement to the baked apples and spiced cake.
This cake works well as a dessert or special treat during apple season, offering a moist texture from the applesauce and the added apples, with a balance of sweet and cinnamon flavors. The caramel adds richness and a contrast to the soft cake and tender fruit.
A simple swap or homemade apple pie spice can be used in place of cinnamon and sugar to adjust the spice profile slightly. Cooling the cake fully before adding caramel ensures it doesn't run off too quickly.
