Caramel Apple Crisp Recipe

Caramel Apple Crisp features tart peeled and sliced apples layered in a baking dish, topped with a crumbly mixture of oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter. A homemade caramel sauce is drizzled over the apples before baking, and again over the crisp after baking for extra sweetness. The result is a warm, soft fruit filling with a slightly crisp, buttery topping complemented by rich caramel.

Description

This recipe makes a classic apple crisp combining tart apples with a sugary oat topping enhanced by cinnamon and salt. The topping is prepared by cutting cold butter into a blend of oats, flour, brown sugar, and spices until it resembles coarse crumbs. Caramel sauce is made separately by melting caramel candies with milk and poured over the apples before baking and again warmed and drizzled atop the finished dish.

Baking at 375°F for about 35 to 45 minutes allows the apples to soften and the topping to brown nicely. The contrast between the tender fruit and crisp topping defines the texture. Serving this dessert warm with ice cream is suggested to complement the caramel and apple flavors.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 8 cups apples tart variety, peeled and sliced
  • 33 caramels divided
  • 2 tablespoons milk plus 2 teaspoons
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup oats quick cooking
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter cubed, cold

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 375ºF. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Place the apples in the baking dish.
  3. In a saucepan, combine 25 of the caramels with 2 tablespoons of the milk. Melt over medium-low heat until smooth, then pour evenly over the apples.
  4. In a bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt. Using a pastry cutter or fork, cut the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle the mixture over the apples.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven until the topping is browned, 35-45 minutes.  Cool for 10 minutes.
  6. In a small microwave safe bowl, combine the remaining 8 caramels with the remaining 2 teaspoons of milk. Cook in the microwave in 15 second intervals, stirring often, until the caramel is melted and smooth. Drizzle the caramel over the crisp.
  7. Serve with ice cream, if desired.
