Caramel Apple Dump Cake
Description
Caramel Apple Dump Cake offers a convenient way to combine apple pie filling, caramel, and boxed cake mix into a single pan dessert. The apple filling is mixed with lemon juice and apple pie spice, giving a balance of tartness and warm spices. Caramel pieces distributed on top melt during baking, adding rich sweetness and a soft texture contrast.
The dry yellow cake mix is spread over the apples and caramel, then topped with chopped toasted pecans for crunch and chunks of unsalted butter that melt down to moisten the cake mix. Baking at 350°F results in a crisp, golden cake topping with a soft, warmly spiced, caramel-tinged apple base.
Because the layers are not stirred, the cake develops distinct textures: a cakey top with a juicy fruit bottom. Variations include using different cake mixes or nuts, and substituting lemon juice with other juices like apple cider. This no-stir method simplifies the process without sacrificing flavor.
Ingredients
- 3 (20 ounce) cans apple pie filling
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon apple pie spice
- 1 (11 ounce) bag caramels unwrapped and cut in half.
- 1 (15.2) ounce yellow cake mix
- ½ cup pecan chopped, toasted
- 1 cup butter cut into small chunks, unsalted
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Spray a 9x13 glass baking dish with non-stick spray, set aside.
- In a medium-sized mixing bowl add apple pie filling, lemon juice, and apple pie spice. Stir together to combine.
- Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pan and smooth out.
- Arrange the caramel evenly over the apple pie fillings.
- Evenly sprinkle the dry cake mix over top.
- Sprinkle with chopped pecans.
- Place the chunks of butter over the top.
- Bake for 45 minutes or until the top starts to turn golden brown.
Notes
- If soft caramels are unavailable, use 1½ cups of any soft caramel cut into pieces.
- You can substitute yellow cake mix with spice or white cake mix for different flavors.
- Pecans may be replaced with walnuts or omitted based on preference.
- Do not stir the mixture before baking—layers should remain unmixed to achieve the correct texture.
- If lemon juice is not on hand, apple cider or orange juice can be used as an alternative.
