Caramel Apple Dumpling Bites
Description
This recipe uses thawed, un-risen dinner rolls cut into quarters and cooked in a pan with melted butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon forming a syrupy coating. After the rolls brown lightly, crisping on one side, sliced Granny Smith apples are added to the pan and cooked until tender.
The mixture results in sweet, tender dumpling bites with soft apple wedges infused with cinnamon sugar. Drizzling caramel sauce over the plated bites adds a finishing sweetness. Served with vanilla ice cream, it provides a warm dessert with contrasting textures of soft bread and crisp apple.
The use of frozen dinner rolls simplifies preparation. The tartness of Granny Smith apples balances the sweetness from brown sugar and caramel, while the cinnamon adds a warming spice note.
Ingredients
- 18 dinner rolls thawed, but not raised, frozen
- 3 apple Granny Smith variety
- 1/2 cup butter unsalted not margarine
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 cup caramel sauce
Instructions
- In a large fry pan, melt butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon together over medium heat.
- Cut 18 thawed dinner rolls into 4 quarters. Add the mini roll bites into the butter/brown sugar mixture and toss to coat. Place lid over fry pan and let cook while you cut and slice the apples.
- Peel and slice the apples into wedges.
- Turn over the rolls in the fry pan and toss in the apple wedges. The rolls should be golden brown on one side.
- Continue to fry (stir occasionally) until apples and rolls are thoroughly cooked.
- Spoon the mix onto a plate and drizzle a little caramel sauce over the top. Serve with a side of vanilla ice cream.
Notes
- Any crisp, cooking apple variety can substitute for Granny Smith apples if desired.
- Frozen dinner rolls like Rhodes brand can be used for convenience, ensuring they are thawed but not risen before cutting.
- Popular caramel sauce brands to use include Ghirardelli Premium, Mrs. Richardson's, and Torani for consistent flavor.
