Caramel Apples

Caramel Apples feature whole apples on sticks coated in rich, melted caramel that sets firm for a sweet treat. Optional toppings like nuts, candy, or sprinkles add texture and varied flavors. The apples provide a crisp base contrasted by the chewiness of the caramel coating for a satisfying balance, often enjoyed in autumn or as festive snacks.

Description

To prepare Caramel Apples, wax-free apples are washed, dried, and skewered. After chilling the apples to firm up the surface, caramel and water are melted together slowly until smooth and heated to 240°F. Each apple is dipped and swirled in the caramel to form a coating that sets upon cooling. Additional toppings such as chopped nuts, candy pieces, or sprinkles can be applied on the caramel before it firms. White chocolate coating is an optional extra step for added flavor and decoration.

These apples can be refrigerated once coated and will keep up to two weeks when covered. They offer a tactile contrast between crisp apple and soft caramel, making them popular for seasonal celebrations or as a nostalgic dessert.

Toppings can be customized widely, including mini M&Ms, chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, shredded coconut, crushed cereal, or various crushed candies, allowing for creative presentation.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 6 skewers or popsicle sticks
  • 6 apple Granny Smith, Fuji or Honeycrisp
  • 1 (11-ounce) bag caramels unwrapped, Brach’s Milk Maid brand
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • white chocolate candy coating optional, melted

Toppings

  • Sprinkles optional, chopped nuts, crushed candy
  • nuts
  • Candy

Instructions

  1. Wash apples and let them dry completely. This will help remove the wax on the apple skin, allowing the caramel to stick better.
  2. Remove apple stems and insert skewers or popsicle sticks 1–2 inches in.
  3. Place apples on a parchment paper–lined baking sheet and refrigerate for 1–2 hours.
  4. In the top of a double boiler or in a medium pot over low heat, combine caramels and water and cook, stirring the entire time, until caramel is fully melted and reaches about 240°F, 12–14 minutes.
  5. Working one at a time, hold an apple by the stick, tilt the pot at an angle, and swirl apple in caramel to coat. Gently tap to let excess caramel drip off, then place apple back on parchment paper. Once all apples have been dipped, refrigerate again for 30 minutes.
  6. Once caramel has set, you can enjoy your apples as they are, or dip in melted candy coating, sprinkle on any desired toppings, and set at room temperature.
  7. Store apples refrigerated but remove from the refrigerator at least 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Wash and dry apples thoroughly to remove wax, which helps caramel stick better.
  • Caramel apples can be prepared ahead and refrigerated; they keep well for up to two weeks covered.
  • Varied toppings like mini M&Ms, chocolate chips, shredded coconut, or crushed cereals provide versatile decoration options.
