Chai Spice Apple Crisp

Chai Spice Apple Crisp combines tart apple slices with a blend of warming chai spices in the filling, topped with a crunchy oatmeal chai-spiced crumb. The texture balances tender, bubbling apples under a golden, buttery oat topping. It bakes until bubbling and browned, offering a comforting dessert with multifaceted spice notes. This crisp is ideal for cooler weather or when craving a spiced fruit dessert, and serving warm with ice cream enhances the experience.

Description

Chai Spice Apple Crisp features sliced apples tossed in lemon juice and coated with a mixture of flour, sugar, and chai spices including cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, cardamom, and a hint of black pepper. The filling is arranged in a baking dish, then covered with a crumbly topping made from oats, sugars, spices, flour, and cubes of butter blended to a coarse texture.

As it bakes at 375°F, the topping becomes golden and the apples soften and bubble, melding tartness with the warm spiced notes. The oatmeal topping adds a satisfying crunch to each bite, while the complex chai spice mix infuses the dish with depth and warmth.

This apple crisp is enjoyable served warm, especially with a scoop of ice cream to soften the spices and sweeten the tart apple filling. It makes a thoughtful dessert showcasing chai flavors combined with a traditional apple crisp structure.

Ingredients

Servings

For the Chai Spice Apple Filling:

  • 10 cups apple about 10 medium-sized, peeled and sliced into 1/4" slices
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice fresh
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper ground

For the Oatmeal Chai Crisp Topping:

  • 8 ounces unsalted butter at room temperature, cut into cubes
  • 1 old fashioned oats 1/2 cups
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar firmly packed
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves ground
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper ground
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

Instructions

For the Chai Spice Apple Filling:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees (F). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Place the sliced apples in a large bowl and toss with the lemon juice.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and spices. Sprinkle this mixture over the apples and toss well to coat.
  4. Pour apple mixture into prepared baking dish and set aside while you make the crumb topping.

For the Oatmeal Chai Crisp Topping:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the oats, both sugars, spices, and flour. Add in the cubed butter and, using two forks or a pastry blender, cut the butter into the dry ingredients until mixture resembles a coarse meal.
  2. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.
  3. Place the pan in the oven and bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.
  4. Remove from the oven and place the pan on a cooling rack. Serve warm! Preferably with ice cream.
