Chakalaka {South African Vegetable Relish}

Chakalaka is a South African vegetable relish with a spicy curry base. It combines sautéed onion, garlic, ginger, and curry powder with fresh peppers, grated carrots, tomatoes, and baked beans. The cooked mixture thickens to a relish texture, offering a complex blend of savory, tangy, and mildly spicy flavors with a chunky vegetable consistency. It can be served warm or cold.

Description

This Chakalaka recipe begins by softening onions in oil before adding aromatic garlic, ginger, and mild curry powder for flavor depth. Red and yellow bell peppers add sweetness and texture, balanced by grated carrots layered with spices. Tomato puree and canned tomatoes create a rich base that’s simmered to thicken. Adding canned baked beans and fresh thyme finishes the dish, which has a hearty, chunky relish-like texture.

This relish works well as a side dish accompanying bread, meats, or stews and reflects the distinctive flavors of South African cuisine. It is versatile served either warm or chilled.

The recipe is gluten-free and adapted from Chef Siba Mtongana’s version, ensuring a mild curry flavor that complements the vegetables without overwhelming them.
