Cheater Kouign Amann Recipe

Cheater Kouign Amann uses store-bought puff pastry combined with butter and sugar to create caramelized, flaky pastries with a spiraled, layered appearance. The squares with spiral topping bake in muffin tins until golden and crispy, delivering a sweet, buttery treat with a crisp exterior and tender layers inside.

Description

This Cheater Kouign Amann recipe simplifies the classic Breton pastry by using thawed puff pastry sheets cut into squares and strips. The squares are dipped in melted butter, coated with sugar on one side, and topped with a sugar-coated strip rolled into a loose spiral. Placing them in parchment-lined muffin tins helps form their shape.

Baking at 400°F until golden brown develops caramelized sugar and crisp, flaky layers from the puff pastry. The contrast of crunchy sugared edges with soft, buttery layers inside mimics the traditional Kouign Amann texture without the extensive dough folding.

These pastries serve as an indulgent sweet snack or a unique dessert. Reheating slightly in an oven or air fryer restores their crispness if stored.

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for a few days to maintain texture.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 box puff pastry 2 sheets thawed, frozen
  • 1/2 cup butter melted
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Cut out sixteen 5-inch parchment paper squares. Flour a work surface, lay the puff pastry sheets out, and roll the puff pastry sheets to remove the fold lines.
  2. Cut a puff pastry sheet in half. With one half, cut eight even strips. With the other half, cut eight equal squares. Repeat with the second puff pastry sheet.
  3. Dip the squares in the melted butter. Press one side of each square in sugar and lay each square sugar-side-up on its own parchment paper square. Then dip each strip in butter. Press one side of each strip in sugar and roll into a loose spiral. Place a spiral on top of each square.
  4. Lower the parchment paper squares into the wells of a muffin tin. Press each piece down to fill out the wells. Then bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

  • Keep leftover pastries in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days.
  • Reheat pastries in an oven or air fryer to restore their crisp exterior before serving.
