Cheeseburger Pie

Cheeseburger Pie layers cooked ground beef and onions topped with shredded cheddar cheese and a Bisquick batter baked until golden brown. The filling provides a hearty, savory base with the melted cheddar adding rich flavor, while the Bisquick topping sets with a light, biscuit-like texture. This dish offers a straightforward approach to combining familiar cheeseburger flavors in a more comforting, pie form.

Description

Cheeseburger Pie starts with browned ground beef and onions forming a flavorful and savory base. The shredded cheddar cheese sprinkled on top melts during baking, adding richness. A mixture of milk, eggs, garlic powder, Bisquick, salt, and pepper poured over the meat cooks into a golden, somewhat fluffy topping that contrasts the meat underneath. Baked at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 25 minutes, the pie develops a golden crust while the interior firms up.

The pie can be served immediately, often complemented with ketchup or pickles to echo traditional cheeseburger condiments. It pairs well with sides like sweet potato fries, tater tots, or a fresh salad, allowing it to function as a filling main dish.

This recipe allows for assembling the pie a day ahead, storing it covered in the refrigerator. Baking time may require slight extension if baked from cold. Leftovers keep well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three to four days. Adding crispy chopped bacon before the cheese and topping can add a smoky note to the dish.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ½ cup onion diced
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese shredded
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper ground
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¾ cup Bisquick
  • 2 egg large

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Grease a 9 inch pie pan and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet brown ground beef and onions until cooked through. Drain off grease. Spread ground beef evenly into the bottom of the prepared pie pan. Sprinkle it with shredded cheese.
  4. In a small mixing bowl whisk the milk, seasonings, Bisquick and eggs until just combined. Pour mixture over the top of the ground beef.
  5. Place the pie pan in a preheated oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit and bake for 25 minutes or until the top is golden brown and set.
  6. Remove from the oven and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Assemble the pie a day ahead and refrigerate covered for convenience; extend baking time slightly when baking straight from the fridge.
  • Enhance the pie by adding crispy cooked bacon pieces over the beef layer before sprinkling cheese.
  • Check doneness by ensuring the golden top is set and a toothpick inserted into the Bisquick topping comes out clean.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days; reheat thoroughly before serving.
