Cherry Dump Cake
Description
Cherry Dump Cake uses canned cherry pie filling spread in a baking dish, optionally enhanced with maraschino cherry juice and cherry extract for extra cherry flavor. A yellow cake mix is spread on top, then melted unsalted butter is poured over to moisten the dry cake mix, which bakes into a crisp, golden crust. The contrast of juicy cherries underneath and a buttery cake topping gives this dessert a balance of textures.
The cake bakes uncovered at 350°F for about 45-50 minutes until the top is lightly golden. It is best served warm and goes well with vanilla ice cream. This cake requires minimal effort and no mixing bowls or batters, making it practical for casual cooking.
Leftovers should be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to three days and can be reheated in the microwave. Variations include using other fruit pie fillings such as apple or peach, or different methods of adding the butter like thin slices instead of melted butter poured on top.
Ingredients
- 2 - 21 ounce cherry pie filling canned
- 1/3 cup maraschino cherry juice optional
- 1 teaspoon cherry extract optional
- 15.5 ounce yellow cake mix
- 3/4 cup butter 1 1/2 sticks) melted, unsalted
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray a 9×13 inch baking dish with cooking spray.
- Spread the cherry pie filling on the bottom of the baking dish, then add the maraschino cherry juice and cherry extract if using. Stir to combine and spread into an even layer.
- Cover the pie filling with the cake mix in an even layer. Pour the melted butter over the cake mix covering as much surface area as possible.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until lightly golden on top.
- Let the dump cake cool slightly. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, if desired.
Notes
- Adding maraschino cherry juice and cherry extract boosts the cherry flavor but is optional.
- Butter can be layered sliced over the cake mix instead of melted and poured if preferred.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream for added richness.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days and reheat in the microwave.
- You can substitute the cherry pie filling with other fruit pie fillings like apple or peach for different flavors.
