Chicken and Rice Casserole

Chicken and Rice Casserole is a baked dish combining cooked rice mixed with cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, and shredded cooked chicken. Topped with crispy French fried onions, it offers a creamy, savory base with a crunchy golden topping. This casserole is a comforting one-dish meal with soft, tender textures accented by the onions’ crispness.

Description

The recipe begins by cooking a flavored rice pilaf (such as Rice-A-Roni chicken and garlic) according to package instructions. Once cooked, it is combined with cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, and shredded cooked chicken to create a creamy mixture. This mixture is spread evenly in a greased baking dish and baked.

After baking for 40 minutes, French fried onions are sprinkled on top and the casserole is returned to the oven to crisp the topping for 5 to 10 minutes. The onions brown and add texture contrast to the creamy filling below. The finished casserole is warm and hearty, with soft chicken and rice enveloped in a rich sauce.

This dish makes a practical comfort food that can serve multiple people and is suitable for potlucks or family dinners. The topping can be adjusted or omitted for dietary preferences.
