Chicken Gyros Recipe with Tzatziki Sauce Recipe

Chicken Gyros with Tzatziki Sauce feature marinated chicken breast tenders grilled to tender juiciness, served in warm pita bread with fresh diced vegetables and creamy feta. The marinade includes Greek yogurt, garlic, herbs, and lemon juice for bright, herby flavor. Tzatziki sauce adds a cool, fresh cucumber and yogurt element. This dish offers a mix of textures from tender chicken, crisp veggies, crumbly feta, and soft pita, ideal for a flavorful handheld meal.

Description

Marinated chicken breast tenders soak in a blend of Greek yogurt, lemon juice, white wine vinegar, olive oil, garlic, and aromatic herbs like marjoram, rosemary, and oregano, infusing them with a tangy, herb-forward flavor. After marinating for several hours, the chicken is grilled until nicely charred and cooked through. Warmed pita breads provide a soft base for assembling the gyros, which are then topped with diced tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, and crumbled feta cheese. A side of authentic Greek Tzatziki sauce, prepared ahead with yogurt, cucumber, garlic, and lemon, offers a cool contrast to the savory chicken. This recipe results in a well-balanced, Mediterranean-inspired street food experience with robust flavors and a variety of textures.

The chicken and pita can be kept separately refrigerated for 3-5 days, with instructions for reheating each component to maintain quality. Vegetables should also be stored securely to retain crispness when preparing ahead or serving leftovers.

Instructions

Make the Tzatziki Sauce

  1. Make this Authentic Greek Tzatziki Sauce a few hours in advance or overnight.

Marinate the Chicken

  1. Measure the marinade ingredients and put them into a 1 gallon zip top bag, close the bag and then massage the bag to mix well.
  2. Add the chicken tenders to the zip top bag, close the bag and then massage the bag so that each chicken tender is well covered by the marinade.
  3. Place the bag in the refrigerator and let it marinate for at least 3 hours. 12 hours works the best, but don’t marinate it longer than 24 hours or your chicken will be too mushy.

Warm the Pita Bread

  1. Preheat your oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Just before you cook the chicken, place the pita breads on a baking sheet and place them in the oven to be warmed.

Cook the Chicken

  1. You can cook the chicken on an outdoor grill or an indoor grill pan. Brush the grill / grill pan with olive oil, then preheat using medium high heat.
  2. After the grill / grill pan is hot, remove the chicken from the marinade bag and place on the grill / grill pan.
  3. Cook the chicken for 3 to 5 minutes on each side (cooking time depends on the size of chicken tenders), until they are golden brown and thoroughly cooked with an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
  4. Remove the chicken from the grill / grill pan and place onto a cutting board. Cover with foil and allow to rest for 5 minutes.
  5. Slice the chicken tenders and put on a serving plate.

Assemble the Gyros

  1. Lay out a warmed pita bread onto a plate. Place sliced chicken down the middle of the bread. Now, spoon lots of Authentic Greek Tzatziki sauce on top of the chicken. My advice is to go big here so that you are sure to have lots of tzatziki sauce in your gyro. Add the vegetables that you like…cucumber, tomatoes, and red onion. After the veggies, add some feta cheese crumbles and if you like, sprinkle the chopped parsley on top. Fold up the pita bread and enjoy the symphony of flavors in this delicious, Greek Chicken Gyro sandwich that you made at home!

Notes

  • Store the cooked chicken and pita bread separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator to keep them fresh for up to 3-5 days.
  • Reheat the pita breads in the oven as described in the recipe to maintain their softness.
  • Keep vegetables stored securely to preserve their crispness if not assembling immediately.
  • Reheat chicken gently using microwave bursts or a skillet with olive oil, or oven heat covered with foil, to maintain moisture and texture.
