Chicken Parmesan Gnocchi Bake

The Chicken Parmesan Gnocchi Bake blends ground chicken, cooked gnocchi, and marinara sauce into a skillet base topped with Parmesan and mozzarella cheeses, all baked to golden bubbly perfection. A final addition of fresh burrata and basil adds creaminess and herbaceous freshness. Red pepper flakes give a mild heat to balance the richness. This comforting casserole combines soft potato gnocchi with a savory chicken-tomato sauce and melted cheese layers.

Description

This recipe starts by boiling gnocchi until tender, then draining it while reserving some cooking liquid. Ground chicken is cooked with diced onions and garlic until browned and tender, then combined with the gnocchi, marinara sauce, red pepper flakes, and Parmesan cheese. The reserved cooking water helps thin and bind the sauce components. Mozzarella is sprinkled on top, and the whole skillet bake is baked until the cheese melts and browns slightly, indicating a hot and bubbling dish.

Finishing with a fresh burrata ball placed atop the hot casserole just before serving adds creamy richness contrasted with the tomato and savory meat flavors. Fresh basil or oregano sprigs garnish the dish, contributing earthy herbal notes. The red pepper flakes provide a subtle kick without overpowering the other flavors.

This bake works well as a hearty dinner or family-style meal, easily portioned into bowls. Spinach gnocchi can be used instead of plain to add visual color and an extra vegetable touch. The layering of the soft gnocchi with the tangy marinara and cheesy topping makes each bite flavorful and texturally satisfying.

The dish benefits from baking just until the cheese is bubbly and golden to maintain tender gnocchi and moist chicken. Letting it rest briefly after removing from the oven helps the sauce thicken for easier serving.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 12 ounces gnocchi plain
  • 1 ½ tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 yellow onion diced, medium
  • 4 cloves garlic roughly chopped
  • salt kosher salt and freshly cracked
  • black pepper kosher salt and freshly cracked
  • 1 lb ground chicken
  • 2 cups marinara sauce store-bought
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes crushed
  • 1 ½ cups mozzarella cheese shredded
  • ½ cup Parmesan Cheese shredded
  • 1 burrata fresh, ball
  • basil for garnish, fresh sprigs, or oregano

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Bring a large pot of water to a boil.
  2. Add the gnocchi to the boiling water and cook according to the package directions; drain, reserving ¼ cup of the cooking liquid.
  3. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large nonstick cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the ground chicken and cook, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is cooked through and the onions are golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from the heat and season with salt and pepper.
  4. Add the gnocchi, reserved cooking liquid, marinara sauce and red pepper flakes to the skillet with the chicken mixture and stir to combine. Add the parmesan and stir.
  5. Sprinkle with the mozzarella. Bake on the top oven rack until hot and bubbling and the cheese turns golden, about 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and let sit for 5 minutes. Add the burrata on top. And season with salt and pepper as needed.
  6. Garnish with fresh herbs and serve.

Notes

  • Using spinach gnocchi instead of plain will add a green color and visual interest to the dish.
  • Let the bake rest for 5 minutes after removing from the oven to thicken the sauce before serving.
  • Adjust the amount of red pepper flakes to control the level of heat in the dish.
