Chicken Wontons

Chicken Wontons are small, deep-fried dumplings filled with a mixture of ground chicken, chopped shrimp, scallions, and seasoning. Wrapped tightly in wonton wrappers, these golden brown wontons have a crispy exterior and a savory, tender filling. Served hot, they pair well with sweet chili dipping sauce for a flavorful appetizer or snack.

Description

This recipe blends ground chicken with finely chopped shrimp, scallions, cornstarch, salt, optional fish sauce, sesame oil, and white pepper to create a seasoned filling. The mixture is spooned onto wonton wrappers, edges moistened with water to seal and shape each wonton securely with no gaps.

The wontons are deep-fried in neutral cooking oil until golden brown and crisp. The frying method produces a crunchy outer shell encasing a juicy, flavorful filling that combines poultry and seafood elements with aromatic spices.

Chicken Wontons are commonly served hot alongside a dipping sauce made of Thai sweet chili sauce, lime juice, cilantro, and white sesame seeds. This sauce adds a sweet, tangy, and mildly spicy note that complements the savory fried wontons, making them suitable as finger food or part of an appetizer spread.

Servings
  • 1/2 lb (250g) ground chicken
  • 1/4 lb (113g) Shrimp chopped into small pieces
  • 1 talk scallion cut into rings
  • 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 dash fish sauce optional
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 3 dashes ground white pepper
  • 12 pieces wonton wrappers
  • water for sealing
  • neutral cooking oil for deep frying, generic cooking oil

Dipping Sauce:

  • 3 tablespoons Thai sweet chili sauce
  • 2 teaspoons lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon cilantro chopped, leaves
  • 1 pinch white sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix the ground chicken, shrimp, scallion, and cornstarch until well combined. Add the salt, fish sauce, sesame oil, and white pepper, and stir to mix well. Set aside.
  2. Wrap the wontons using the wonton wrappers by placing a wrapper in your palm. Add 1/2 tablespoon of the filling in the center of the wrapper. Dip your index finger in some water and trace it along the outer edges of the wrapper.
  3. Fold and pinch the edges of the wonton wrapper to seal it tightly, ensuring there are no openings at the top and that the filling is securely enclosed.
  4. Heat some cooking oil in a wok or frying pan and deep-fry the wontons until golden brown. Serve hot with sweet chili sauce, or enjoy them plain.
