Chili Cheese Fries
Description
This recipe features chili prepared with lean ground beef, finely chopped onions and bell peppers, red kidney beans, tomato sauce, beef stock, and tomato paste seasoned with chili powder and Worcestershire sauce. Simmering the chili intensifies its taste and thickens the sauce, producing a robust topping.
The prepared chili is ladled over cooked French fries, which can be homemade or frozen varieties, and sprinkled with shredded cheddar cheese. The heat from the chili melts the cheese, creating a creamy layer. Optional toppings like sour cream, diced tomatoes, and green onions add freshness and balance.
Chili Cheese Fries serve well as a casual dinner or game-day snack. Using pre-shredded cheese and frozen fries can speed preparation. Leftover chili is perfect for making this dish quickly or can be substituted with canned chili in a pinch.
Ingredients
Chili
- 1 pound ground beef lean
- 1 onion finely chopped
- ½ green bell pepper finely chopped
- 15 ounces red kidney beans drained and rinsed, canned
- 8 ounces tomato sauce
- 1 cup beef stock or broth
- 3 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
For Serving
- 6 cups French Fries cooked, about 32 ounces frozen
- 4 cups cheddar cheese shredded
- toppings as desired see notes
Instructions
- Cook fries according to recipe or package directions (we love this baked fries recipe).
- In large skillet brown ground beef, onions, and bell pepper until no pink remains. Drain any fat.
- Stir in remaining chili ingredients and simmer for 20 minutes or until the stock has cooked down and the chili sauce has thickened.
- Divide fries over 4 plates. Top with hot chili and cheese. Add additional toppings as desired.
Notes
- Use slightly thicker chili than traditional to hold well on fries.
- Place cheese under the chili so it melts properly; add extra on top if desired for more cheesiness.
- Optional toppings include sour cream, green onions, and diced tomatoes for added freshness.
- Frozen fries are a convenient shortcut, especially when cooked in an air fryer.
- Leftover or canned chili can be used to reduce cooking time without sacrificing flavor.
- Pre-shredded cheeses work well in this recipe for convenience and melting.
