Chocolate Almond Butter Smoothie
Description
This smoothie features a base of almond milk combined with chocolate protein powder and almond butter, giving it a chocolate-almond richness. Dates add natural sweetness, while frozen banana and ice ensure a cold, creamy consistency. Optional additions like maca and lucuma powders contribute subtle malted and maple-like flavors.
The smoothie can be garnished with coconut whipped cream and cacao nibs, which add a light creaminess and crunch, enhancing the overall experience with contrasting textures and flavors.
The recipe accommodates different chocolate protein powders, typically using between 27 and 34 grams (about 1 to 2 scoops), allowing customization of protein content. Choosing coconut whipped cream or traditional dairy whipped cream are both suitable garnish options depending on preference.
Cacao nibs enrich the shake with antioxidants and add a mild bitterness that complements the sweet elements. Maca powder provides an earthy tone, historically used for vitality, while lucuma powder offers a subtle natural sweetness on the low glycemic index.
Ingredients
- 12 ounces almond milk or oat milk, coconut milk, or cow's milk
- 27 to 34 grams chocolate protein powder see note below
- 1 Tablespoon almond butter
- 1 to 2 dates pitted
- 1/2 banana (preferably frozen)
- ice
Optional Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon maca powder
- 1 teaspoon lucuma powder
Garnish:
- Coconut whipped cream
- cacao nibs
- dark chocolate for glass, melted
Instructions

- Take a glass and drizzle melted dark chocolate all over the glass. Pour the chocolate smoothie into the glass. Top with coconut whipped cream and cacao nibs.
Notes
- The amount of chocolate protein powder can be adjusted between 1 and 2 scoops depending on the brand and desired protein content.
- Adding coconut whipped cream on top recreates a classic smoothie-shop appearance and adds creamy texture; traditional dairy whipped cream can also be used.
- Cacao nibs add crunch and unsweetened rich chocolate flavor as well as antioxidants.
- Maca powder offers a nutty, malted flavor and traditional benefits like combating stress and fatigue.
- Lucuma powder imparts a natural maple-like sweetness with a low glycemic index and adds antioxidants.
