Chocolate Brownies

Chocolate Brownies come together with simple pantry staples like oil, sugar, eggs, cocoa powder, and flour to create a dense, cakey texture with rich chocolate flavor. Baking in a 9x13'' pan offers an even square surface to cut into serving pieces. An optional chocolate frosting adds a creamy, sweet finish that enhances the chocolate depth. This recipe allows for an oil or butter base which affects the cake-like quality of the brownies.

Description

The Chocolate Brownies recipe combines oil, sugar, eggs, cocoa powder, salt, and flour to produce a classic chocolate baked good with a moist but firm texture. Baking at 350°F for about 30 minutes results in a set center with soft edges. The cocoa powder lends a bittersweet chocolate flavor, and the vanilla extract adds aroma and depth. After cooling, these brownies can be topped with a chocolate frosting made from creamed butter, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla to provide a smooth, rich topping.

This recipe yields a large batch suitable for slicing into multiple servings, making it practical for gatherings or dessert portions over several days. The optional frosting adds sweetness and a luscious texture that contrasts the fudgier brownie base.

Variations in the fat used—choosing all oil, all butter, or a mix—can subtly change the crumb and moisture, with butter tending to create a more cake-like brownie. These brownies also freeze well up to three months if stored correctly after baking and cooling.

Ingredients

Servings

Brownies:

  • 1 cup oil
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large egg
  • 6 Tablespoons cocoa powder unsweetened
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract

Chocolate Frosting (optional):

  • 1/2 cup butter , room temperature
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder unsweetened
  • salt pinch
  • 2-3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 5-6 Tablespoons milk (or half and half, or cream)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Mix sugar and oil in a mixing bowl.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each egg is added. Add vanilla.
  4. Add dry ingredients: cocoa powder, salt, flour, and stir until combined.
  5. Bake: Pour batter into a greased 9x13'' baking pan and spread into an even layer. Bake at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool completely before frosting.

Chocolate Frosting:

  1. Cream the butter until light and fluffy. Add cocoa powder and salt and mix until well combined.
  2. Add vanilla. Alternately add powdered sugar and milk, mixing well until you reach your desired frosting consistency. Spread frosting over cooled brownies.
  3. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • Butter can replace oil for a more cake-like brownie texture.
  • Brownies can be made 1-2 days ahead and kept covered in the fridge for freshness.
  • Freeze baked and cooled brownies up to 3 months; thaw overnight in the refrigerator or at room temperature.
