Chocolate Cake Balls Recipe

Chocolate Cake Balls are made by crumbling baked chocolate cake and mixing it with chocolate frosting to form firm balls. These are chilled, then dipped in melted chocolate coating and decorated with sprinkles. The result is a sweet, bite-sized confection combining cake and candy textures.

Description

This recipe starts by baking a chocolate cake from a mix and cooling it completely. The cake is crumbled finely by hand or fork and mixed with most of a can of chocolate frosting until the mixture holds together but is not too soft. After chilling in the refrigerator, the mixture is rolled into small balls and frozen briefly to firm them up. The cake balls are then dipped into melted chocolate or almond bark. A wooden skewer is used for dipping, and excess coating is tapped off before adding sprinkles as decoration. Chilling again sets the coating solidly.

The combination of moist cake crumbs and smooth frosting inside a firm chocolate shell creates a rich texture contrast. These treats can be served at parties or as individual sweet snacks. They also provide an easy way to repurpose leftover cake.

Nutrition information excludes the extra ingredients required for cake preparation, focusing solely on the assembled cake balls.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 chocolate cake mix 18.25 oz package, includes ingredients to prepare cake
  • 1 chocolate frosting 16 oz can, prepared
  • 1 dipping chocolate or almond bark
  • Sprinkles for topping

Instructions

  1. Prepare cake and bake according to package directions in a 9x13 inch pan. Allow to cool completely.
  2. After cake has cooled, use your hands to crumble the cake into a large mixing bowl. A fork can also be used to crumble large chunks. Make sure cake is completely broken into fine crumbs.
  3. Add 1/2-3/4 of the container of frosting, mixing with a spoon until the cake crumbs are coated. I don't add the entire container because then the cake balls come out a little too mushy. Place the bowl in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes.
  4. Remove the bowl from the refrigerator and roll the mixture into small balls. Place balls on a plate or cookie sheet topped with wax paper and freeze for 1 hour.
  5. Melt dipping chocolate or almond bark according to package directions. Place a wooden skewer on the bottom of a cake ball and dip into the chocolate, swirling and then tapping off the excess. Place the skewer in a mug or glass (I used short skewers for this recipe) and immediately add sprinkles if using. Allow to dry completely. Repeat with remaining cake balls.
