Description

These bars begin by mixing a chocolate cake mix with room temperature butter and an egg to form a thick dough. About two-thirds of this dough is pressed into a lined 9-inch square pan to create the bottom crust. A mixture of milk and white chocolate chips is sprinkled evenly over this layer. Then, sweetened condensed milk is poured over the chocolate chips, adding sweetness and moisture.

The remaining dough is divided into balls and scattered over the top, pressed lightly to create a partial topping, and then more chocolate chips are sprinkled on top. When baked at 350°F for about 27 to 30 minutes, the bars set with a slightly chewy texture and rich chocolate layers that balance dense dough with melted chocolate chips and the sweetness from the condensed milk.

  • 15.25 ounce chocolate cake mix (1 box)
  • ½ cup butter at room temperature, unsalted
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup milk chocolate chips
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Line a 9-inch x 9-inch pan with parchment paper & spray with cooking spray.
  3. Combine cake mix, butter, and egg in a stand mixer bowl. Beat with the paddle attachment until it forms into a thick dough. (You can also use an electric hand mixer.)
  4. Press 2/3 of the dough into the prepared baking pan- it will look like there isn't enough to cover the bottom, just keep working it into a thin even layer. It will cover the bottom.
  5. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup of each type of chocolate chips over the dough.
  6. Pour sweetened condensed milk over the top in a thin, even coating.
  7. Separate remaining dough into balls, and evenly distribute over the top of the chocolate chips.
  8. Press dough balls down to flatten a bit.
  9. Sprinkle with remaining chocolate chips.
  10. Bake for 27- 30 minutes until the top is set.
  11. Remove from oven and cool completely before slicing... if you aren't eating warm, right out of the pan.
