Chocolate Cake Mix Donuts Recipe

This Chocolate Cake Mix Donut recipe uses boxed cake mix combined with egg, melted butter, and milk to create a batter that is baked either in the oven or cooked in a mini electric donut maker. The donuts are soft and cake-like with optional glazes for decoration.

Description

The recipe starts by mixing a chocolate or chosen flavor cake mix with egg, melted unsalted butter, and milk until smooth. The batter is transferred into a piping bag or resealable bag to fill donut pans evenly. Baking at 350°F for 15 to 18 minutes yields light and fluffy donuts once cooled.

An alternative cooking method uses a preheated electric mini donut maker, cooking the batter for about 7-8 minutes until done, offering a quicker option with a similar texture. After cooking, donuts are cooled before decorating.

For decorating, store-bought frosting can be used for chocolate glaze, while a simple vanilla glaze is made by mixing confectioners sugar with milk. Sprinkles add a festive touch. This recipe provides a flexible way to enjoy cake-style donuts using accessible ingredients and equipment.

  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup butter melted, unsalted
  • 3/4 cup milk

For Decorating

  • Sprinkles assorted, fun

Chocolate glaze:

  • 1 chocolate frosting container

Vanilla glaze:

  • 1 cup confectioners sugar
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk

Instructions

Oven Baking:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease donut pans with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. Beat the cake mix, egg, melted butter, and milk in a mixing bowl.
  3. When the batter is well mixed, transfer the mixture to a large piping bag or a resealable bag. Pipe the mixture into the donut pans.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  5. Allow the donuts to cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then flip the pan over onto a wire cooling rack and allow the donuts to cool completely.

Electric Mini Doughnut Maker:

  1. Preheat the donut machine as directed by the manufacturer.
  2. Beat the cake mix, egg, butter, and milk in a mixing bowl.
  3. When the batter is well mixed, transfer the mixture to a large piping bag or a resealable bag. Pipe the mixture into the donut pans.
  4. Bake in the donut machine for 7-8 minutes until the middle of the donut is cooked.
  5. Remove them to a wire rack to cool.

Store Bought Frosting:

  1. When the donuts are cool, remove the lid from the frosting and heat for 30 seconds to 1 minute in the microwave, until the frosting is slightly runny.
  2. Drizzle the melted frosting over the top of each donut, then decorate with sprinkles, chocolate chips, or whatever you like.

Simple Vanilla Glaze:

  1. Combine the powdered sugar and milk in a bowl. Stir until all the lumps are gone. Add extra milk if necessary to get it to a runny consistency.
  2. Dip donuts into the glaze and set them aside on racks to decorate.

Notes

  • Any boxed cake mix flavor is suitable for this recipe, allowing customization.
  • If a piping bag is not available, a resealable plastic bag with a corner cut off works well for filling donut pans.
