Chocolate Covered Oranges Recipe
Description
The Chocolate Covered Oranges Recipe coats fresh mandarin orange segments with dark chocolate melted gently with avocado oil for smoothness and optionally sweetened with stevia glycerite. After peeling and segmenting the orange, each piece is dipped halfway into the chocolate mixture and allowed to set in the refrigerator. This results in a balance between the juicy, tangy citrus and the bitter-sweet, glossy chocolate coating.
The combination offers a refreshing flavor contrast and a pleasing mouthfeel with the firm chocolate shell and tender fruit inside. This treat is best served chilled but can be brought to room temperature before serving to enhance taste and texture. It provides a refined snack or light dessert.
Leftovers can be stored airtight in the refrigerator for 3-4 days and should be removed about an hour before eating to let the chocolate soften slightly. Freezing is not recommended to preserve quality. Using high-quality dark chocolate with a suitable cocoa percentage and adding sweetener is optional depending on chocolate bitterness.
Ingredients
- 1 mandarin orange large
- 1 ounce dark chocolate see notes below
- 1 teaspoon avocado oil
- ¼ teaspoon stevia glycerite optional; equals 1 tablespoon of sugar
Instructions
- Peel the orange and divide it into segments. Line a large plate with wax paper.
- Place the chocolate in a small microwave-safe bowl and melt it in the microwave in two or three 30-second sessions, stirring after each session. Stir the oil and sweetener into the melted chocolate.
- Dip half of each orange section into the melted chocolate. Swirl to allow any excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl.
- Place the dipped orange segments on the prepared plate. Refrigerate them until set, for about 20 minutes, then serve.
Notes
- Choose quality dark chocolate like Lindt 78% or 85% chips for the best flavor.
- Add stevia glycerite if using very dark chocolate to balance bitterness; adjust to taste.
- Melting chocolate in short intervals in the microwave while stirring prevents burning and ensures smooth texture.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days.
- Remove from fridge about an hour before serving to bring chocolate to a good texture and flavor.
- Freezing the chocolate-covered oranges is not recommended as it can affect texture and taste.
