Chocolate Covered Popcorn
Description
This recipe starts with two bags of microwave-popped popcorn spread on wax paper-lined sheets. White and dark chocolate wafers are melted separately in the microwave at medium power, stirred gently at intervals to prevent seizing, and optionally enhanced with vegetable oil for a better texture. Each chocolate is then drizzled liberally over the popcorn using a fork. After the chocolate sets, the popcorn gains a crisp outer shell of chocolate with a tender inside.
The combination of white and dark chocolate creates a varied flavor profile—white chocolate adds creamy sweetness while dark chocolate contributes deeper cocoa notes. The popcorn remains crunchy beneath the chocolate coating, making it a textural contrast. The microwaving technique helps preserve the chocolate's smoothness and avoids overheating.
The drizzle method allows light coverage on the popcorn without clumping, suitable for sharing or gifting. Reversing and drizzling the other side of the popcorn adds more chocolate but is optional. This snack is ideal for movie nights or casual treats.
Using medium microwave power and short intervals prevents chocolate from scorching or clumping. Vegetable oil incorporation helps maintain a glossy finish and smoother melts. Allowing the chocolate to dry completely before handling ensures the coating stays in place.
Ingredients
- 2 bags microwave popcorn popped
- 8 oz white chocolate wafers or chips
- 8 oz dark chocolate wafers or chips
- 2 tsp vegetable oil (divided, and optional)
Instructions
- Line 2 rimmed baking sheets with wax paper. Spread popped popcorn evenly on both sheets. Set aside.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, add white chocolate wafers 1 tsp of vegetable oil (if using), and microwave on MED power (50%) for 20-30 second intervals for the first minute, stirring after each cooking interval.
- If needed, microwave in 15 second intervals, stirring after each microwave interval, until wafers are JUST melted.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 with dark chocolate wafers.
- Use a fork to liberally drizzle both chocolates onto popcorn. Let dry and enjoy!
Notes
- Use medium power and stir often while melting chocolate to prevent scorching or seizing.
- Adding a teaspoon of vegetable oil to the chocolate helps keep it smooth and shiny.
- For more chocolate coverage, flip the popcorn and drizzle the other side after the first coating dries.
