Chocolate Covered Strawberries
Description
This recipe transforms fresh strawberries into an elegant treat by coating them in melted milk chocolate that has been softened with vegetable shortening for a smooth texture and shine. The strawberries are washed and thoroughly dried to ensure the chocolate adheres well. Each berry is dipped and placed on parchment to cool and set.
After setting, the optional white chocolate drizzle adds contrast and visual appeal. The white chocolate is melted and piped through a small cut hole to create fine lines. The dipped strawberries chill again to harden the decoration. The resulting texture combines the juicy strawberry with crisp, sweet chocolate.
Chocolate covered strawberries are a popular dessert or gift item, perfect for sharing at celebrations or as a simple indulgence. They can be served chilled and pair naturally with coffee or sparkling wine.
Drying strawberries completely prevents clumpy or uneven chocolate coating. Allowing excess chocolate to drip before setting avoids pools on the parchment. Different chocolates may be substituted to vary taste and color. The recipe yields about 16 strawberries, serving around eight people assuming two strawberries each.
Ingredients
- 2 cups milk chocolate chips
- 1 tsp vegetable shortening such as Crisco brand
- 1 lb. strawberry or approximately 16 berries - washed and dried well, fresh
- 1/4 cup white chocolate chips optional
Instructions
- In a microwave-safe bowl, add milk chocolate chips and the shortening and microwave on MED power (50%) for one minute, stirring once about halfway though.
- If needed, microwave in 15 second intervals, stirring after each microwave interval, until chocolate is JUST melted.
- Once the chocolate is melted, dip the strawberries in, one at a time and place onto a sheet of parchment paper (or wax paper) to set.
- After all of the strawberries are dipped, place into the refrigerator to chill and harden for 10 minutes.
- Once the chocolate has set, melt the white chocolate the same way you melted the milk chocolate chips.
- Pour the melted white chocolate into a small resealable plastic bag. Cut a tiny hole in one corner of the bag. Drizzle white chocolate over as many of the strawberries as you'd like.
- Return strawberries to the refrigerator to chill for at least another 5-10 minutes.
Notes
- This recipe yields about 16 chocolate covered strawberries, serving approximately 8 people.
- Dry strawberries thoroughly before dipping to ensure chocolate sticks properly.
- After dipping, hold berries over the bowl to let excess chocolate drip and tilt tips upward to prevent pooling on parchment.
- You may substitute milk and white chocolate chips with other chocolate types according to preference.
